Canemaker, John The Animated Raggedy Ann and Andy: An Intimate Look at the Art of Animation Indianapolis Bobbs Merrill 1977 First Edition, 1st Printing Stiff Wraps Very Good to Near-Fine Issued Without Jacket Book 292-page monograph on the making of "Raggedy Ann and Andy--A Musical Adventure" and NOT a Disney product. Along the way, Canemaker takes care of his subtitle: "An Intimate Look at the Art of Animation: Its History, Techniques, and Artists". Practically every cel is shown, in all stages of production, and one is grateful for the book's index. Very Good to Near-Fine: light edge-wear and an incipient crease to the front cover; stamp to half-title indicating that the Easter Seal Society of New York "presented" the book, and that Xerox Corporation "donated" it.

Fitzgerald, Edward (Translator) The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Arden/Three Sirens Press Reprint Hardcover Good to Very Good Issued Without Jacket Book Edmund J. Sullivan Full-page drawings on every other page by Edmund J. Sullivan. These editions are always made with charming detail, although because they were inexpensive, they have not held up very well. On this copy, the hinge is a bit shaky, the original cream cloth has darkened (particularly at the spine), and the spine ends have begun to fray. Owner's name to free endpaper.

Groth, John Studio: Asia World 1952 First Edition Hardcover Near-Very Good Good Book John Groth Groth was an artist-correspondent, a designation which may appear quaint in today's journalistic context but which serves the reader well. These sketches, made during the Korean War, bring that conflict home in a way that Mailer does, but news photographs of the time do not. Near-Very Good hardcover binding with some scuffing to spine in Good jacket with chips and heavy edgewear.

Hirschfeld, Al The American Theatre as seen By Hirschfeld [signed] New York George Braziller/Whitney Museum 1961 First Edition, 1st Printing Hardcover Fine Very Good to Near-Fine Book Signed by Artist First edition, first printing [stated], of the first compendium of Hirschfeld's work, with an introduction by Brooks Atkinson. The work, of course, is wonderful. This copy SIGNED AND INSCRIBED WITH THE CHARACTERISTIC TWO POINTING FINGERS DOODLE on the title page. Laid in, as a bunch of bonuses, are an undated photograph of Hirschfeld, possibly signed "Al Hirschfeld" on the reverse (not his characteristic all caps signature, so may have been the collector's notation), a special issue of Playbill dated June 23, 2003, on the occasion of the rededication of Martin Beck as the Al Hirschfeld, and a reprint of an advertisement for the book. Hard cover binding is in Fine condition; dust jacket is near-Fine, with a rough top edge, tiny nick to bottom front edge, and wear to spine head.

Holme, Bryan Advertising: Reflections of a Century New York Viking Press/Studio Book 1982 First Edition Hardcover Fine Very Good Book Usually wary of books described as offering "a panoramic view" of anything, I found this panorama of advertising compelling. At 324 pages, it's hard to tote around or sit with, but worth it. Consider how many 20th century well-known fine artists passed through an "advertising phase"! They're all here, plus a wealth of not-so-well-known talent. In addition, the evolution of the graphic arts is here clearly charted, in full color. Fine index, too. The hardcover binding is fine; the dust jacket has a closed tear to the rear side of the spine head.

Pallucchini, Rodolfo Die Zeichnungen Des Francesco Guardi Im Museum Correr Zu Venedig Venice, Italy 1943 Numbered Boards Fine Near-Fine Book (Venice, 1943, #1325 of 5000 copies printed). Guardi was one of a famous 18th century family of Venetian artists whose work is not very well documented, since his older brother and his son both had a free hand. However, the old master pen and brown wash drawings here are lovely, impressionistic, and clearly Venetian. It is a curiosity that a 252-page book featuring his work should have been printed during wartime; although the drawings are a pleasure, the paper is not. Innumerable drawings here, including some intricate foldouts. Fine boards, in near-Fine dust jacket with light soil, small closed tear to tail, tiny ding in spine fold, faint foxing to page edges.
