12 Alpert, George [photographs] Second Chance to Live: The Suicide Syndrome
New York Da Capo Press 1975 First Edition Stiff Wraps As Issued Fine Issued Without Jacket Book
Text by Ernest Leogrande tries to explain this study and Alpert's "photographs of people who tried to commit suicide and didn't succeed". If the book had no title, preface, or introduction, it would be impossible to tell at first glance what the pictures were about. Alpert has a sure hand with the camera and portraiture, and the choice of black and white over color is a profound one. Fine in stiff wraps as issued.

13 Andoe, Joe Joe Andoe: Magic Circle
Los Angeles Earl McGrath Gallery 2002 First Edition Stiff Wraps Fine Issued Without Jacket Book
16 page catalogue with seven deceptively simple paintings shown. This becomes an artist's book for me, though, because of his writing: on the title page, "One Afternoon in 1972, Me and my girlfriend were in the back seat of my car in a field off east 11th street (Route 66) in East Tulsa, when a horse looked through the window. JA". Can you resist that? Read, then, the next page, entitled "This would be the day all of my dreams come true" about his first taste of artistic success. Fine in stiff wraps as issued.

17 Baumgarten, Lothar Lothar Baumgarten: AMERICA Invention
New York Guggenheim Museum 1993 First Edition Wraps As Issued Near-Fine Issued Without Jacket Book
112-page tabloid-size catalogue for an exhibition held January 28-March 7, 1993, is another of those almost-artist's-books that are part of the art project, as was Baumgarten's painted wall installation in the Museum. He apparently painted the installation to reflect the Wright-ness of the building and designed the publication to reflect the Museum's own magazine. Whatever, the book, as object, is gorgeous, primarily because most of it consists of photographs Baumgarten took between 1968 and 1970 at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, and in its storage facility. That makes an examination of Unsettled Objects, the title of this particular publication, possible, including the whole subject of naming, so essential to museumology. Near-Fine in wraps as issued, with the last few pages dog-eared to the bottom corner, not affecting text.

This catalogue is in Fine condition and a fitting tribute.

Very, very cool. This copy withdrawn from a museum library, with stamps to endpapers and page edges, small taped spine label, and card pocket inside rear cover.
