105 Armstrong, Richard Alexis Smith [1991]
New York Whitney Museum of American Art/Rizzoli 1991 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine
244-page catalogue of the Whitney's big retrospective show of Smith's work, the first. She interned with Frank Gehry, remember, and she's an L.A. woman: the result is a lifelong dedication to the peculiar detritus of popular culture in her environment. Part assemblage, part collage, part sculpture, definitely part installation-it's all a kick with a serious mind behind it. Fine hardcover in Fine dust jacket.

109 Arnold, Eve Film Journal
New York Bloomsbury 2001 First Edition Hard Cover in Dust Jacket Near-Fine Fine
256-pages, including an index of the film people whose photographs are included. Perhaps the best portrait is the one Cartier-Bresson tok of Arnold in 1998. Near-Fine hardcover binding with lower corner of the first free endpaper clipped; in Fine dust jacket.

118 Attia, Kader Kader Attia
Zurich JRP/Ringier 2006 First Edition Illustrated Boards Fine Issued Without Jacket
Both a monograph and the catalogue for an exhibition held in 2006-7 in two separate venues: the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon (for which specific pieces were developed) and le MAGASIN, Centre National d'Art Contemporain de Grenoble, at which the entire central space was occupied by Attia's Tsunami, made to scale with the surrounding industrial buildings. The work is shown installed, for the most part, with viewers walking around inside the installations. What can I say about the work? Attia loves metal, and can make it look like silks or predatory insects; he also loves the repetition of forms and controlled chaos. Fine in illustrated boards without dust jacket as issued.

137 Baldessari, John and Meg Cranston 100 Artists See God
New York Independent Curators International 2004 First Edition Stiff Wraps As Issued Fine Issued Without Jacket
136-page catalogue for an exhibition that began at the Jewish Museum in March 2004, then went to Laguna, and ended at the Contemporary Art Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in 2005. Essay by Thomas McEvilley. 100 artists, really, from Reverend Ethan Acres to Mario Ybarra, Jr., and including Terry Allen, Eleanor Antin, Chris Burden, Damien Hirst, Mike Kelley, Louise Lawler, Barry Le Va, Lichtenstein, Nauman, Oursler, Richard Prince, Ruscha, Wegman, Weiner, and even John Waters and Leonard Nimoy. "Contemporary artists are willing to see god if you ask them", the curators concluded. The idea for the exhibition was hatched shortly after nine-eleven, but only obliquely relates to that seminal event. All plates in color (where possible), and although the work is divided into categories ("Artists See God as Architect", "... as Light", "...as Tyrant", "...as Word", they don't help the viewer much. Fine in stiff wraps as issued: remainder dot to bottom page edges at spine.

143 Barbero, Luca Massimo [curator] Venice 1948-1986: The Art Scene: Photographs from The ArchivioArte Fondazione
Modena, Italy Fondazione Cassa Di Risparmio 2006 First Edition Hard Cover Fine  Issued Without Jacket
326-page monster of a catalogue published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name held at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice February 5-May 21, 2006. Boards covered in glittery silver paper, plus silvery decorations and effects inside, convey the general approach. The photographs are wonderful; the text is expendable. Dictionary-like cut-outs create chronological divisions: 1948-1954, 1956-1962, 1964-1968, 1970-1986 (note that 64-68 was intense, apparently). A great reference. 144 Bard Center for Curatorial Studies Re-Shuffle: Notions of an Itinerant Museum
New York Bard College 2006 First Edition Cards in Box Near-Fine Issued Without Jacket
This publication-as-exhibition (or exhibition-as-publication) is, physically, a cardboard box containing a bunch of 7" x 7" cards, each of which represents the contribution of an artist, a group of artists, a curator, or an arts organization. Contributors included a wide range of artists from Vito Acconci to Mans Wrange in a range of locations, from Brooklyn to Iceland to Lima, in a range of occupations all under the umbrella of "cultural producer". The face of each card contains one or more photographs or graphic representations, and the reverse identifies the contributor. Enough material here to provide significant stimulation for an indefinite number of years in graduate school. The non-academic art world may want to start thinking, too. The cards are all in Fine condition; the box, with its original seal broken (another, unbroken seal is enclosed) is a bit squished, but not broken or torn. An intriguing artifact that should increase in importance as time passes, given what's been happening in museums.

New York Cordier & Ekstrom 1970 First Edition Wraps As Issued Very Good  Issued Without Jacket Ex-Library
32-page catalogue with a lovely, very 70s, introductory essay by Donald Barthelme ("Woman is an imaginary being...a concatenation of ideas about woman"), illustrated with 27 plates (4 in color, tipped in) showing modern and ancient concatenations by Duchamp, Steinberg, Lindner (one of the tipped in color plates, of course), Bearden, de Kooning, Noguchi, Dubuffet, Matisse, Hirshfield, Man Ray, Magritte and others. 154 Bartscherer, Joseph Joseph Bartscherer: Forest
Philadelphia PA Institute of Contemporary Art 2000 First Edition Wraps Fine Issued Without Jacket
16-page catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition "Wall Power" held May 13-July 30, 2000, focused on the work of Bartscherer alone, from his "Forest" series of huge photographs on vinyl, meant to be installed in large public spaces rather than in an intimate museum gallery. Since none of the work is shown in context in this catalogue, difficult to see what impact they had in the exhibition, but the detail is hyper-painterly and completely absorbing. This copy discarded by a museum library, with stamp to last page but no other markings or intrusions. Otherwise, Fine in illustrated wraps as issued..

165 Baumgarten, Lothar Lothar Baumgarten: AMERICA Invention
New York Guggenheim Museum 1993 First Edition Wraps As Issued Near-Fine Issued Without Jacket
112-page tabloid-size catalogue for an exhibition held January 28-March 7, 1993, is another of those almost-artist's-books that are part of the art project, as was Baumgarten's painted wall installation in the Museum. He apparently painted the installation to reflect the Wright-ness of the building and designed the publication to reflect the Museum's own magazine. Whatever, the book, as object, is gorgeous, primarily because most of it consists of photographs Baumgarten took between 1968 and 1970 at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, and in its storage facility. That makes an examination of Unsettled Objects, the title of this particular publication, possible, including the whole subject of naming, so essential to museumology. Two copies available: Both are essentially near-Fine in wraps as issued; one has a "withdrawn" stamp to the Introduction page, but is otherwise Fine, and the other has no markings, but the last few pages are dog-eared to the bottom corner, not affecting text. Either one offered at $50.00.

London The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths 1966 First Edition Stiff Wraps Near-Fine Issued Without Jacket
Catalogue for an exhibition held October 4-19, 1966. In the Introduction, Graham Hughes, the Company's art director, admires Becker's "perfect" workmanship and use of "regular carefully polished stones": "Not for him the romantically natural finish, the casual effects derived from action painting, the delightful rough crystals which are fashionable today," which tells us where the Company was at in the Sixties, as well as something about what was happening to jewelry design and other arts at that time. In addition to Becker's wonderfully sculptural rings and jewelry, there are examples of his tableware and his actual sculpture, including a spectacular metal fountain. All black and white plates (about 45 pages of them), highly suitable. Text in English and German. Near-Fine in stiff wraps with light soiling to corners and page edges.
