One of 600 copies printed, this 48-page catalogue documents yet another attempt to take a "fresh" look at the 19th century via juxtaposing the work of two contemporary abstract painters and of John Pfahl, a conceptual photographer if there ever was one. So, your Harts, your Ryders, your Innesses, your Chases, appeared in the same exhibition with Kahn's paintings (which at least have a horizon line) and Steir's exuberant squiggles and "paths". Pfahl, perhaps to no one's surprise, produced a couple of high-tech 19th century landscape photographs. Interviews with the artists and the curator, Douglas Dreishpoon. Fine in wraps as issued.

Excellent essay by John Yau, and an interview by Barbara Weidle, accompany 30 color plates of Steir's abstract work-abstract, but definitely suggestive of water, and definitely dazzling.
