An intriguing salesman's sample of these two books, The Story of Mexico: Land of Conquest and Revolution by Charles Morris (1914) and The Story of the Panama Canal (1913) by Logan Marshall. Both illustrated with "official" photographs. Mexico has colored map frontispiece and 36 b & w plates preceding the table of contents and excerpts from the chapters (real excerpts; they stop in mid-sentence). In the center, set of pink pages containing Confidential Instructions to Representatives (i.e., the salesmen) on how to sell Mexico, a single similar page for Panama Canal. Note that the order blank is missing. Panama has color frontispiece and 3 additional hand-colored plates, table of contents, color foldout map, then sample text, illustrated with photographs, drawings, and an additional map. Altogether, a fascinating bound book in hardcover with pictorial pastedowns to each front cover, with a sample of the spine glued inside each cover. Red cloth binding is much faded to the Panama board and spine, less so to the Mexico board. Moderate wear to corners; fraying and a one-inch chip out of spine covering at tail.
