This is a beautiful and beautifully-produced catalogue (photography by Karin L. Willis), with more than 100 color plates of dress and details, even some hats and shoes, and fine text by Martin. But why? The answer to that question is complex, part curatorial independence, part directorial clout, part donor wooing. Oh, there are plenty of good reasons for a major museum to collect textiles and costumes and related material cultural artifacts along with the scholarly materials that support them, but the process is by no means simple. One wonders what the spectator thought about this exhibition-the Institute showing off what it had bought or been given in the 1990s since Martin took over? a nudge to potential benefactors who might like to see their old clothes become the Met's new ones (with suitable credit)? Perhaps time will tell. Meanwhile, this catalogue exists, in Fine condition in stiff wraps as issued.
