The subtitle is: Featuring Snapshots by Anonymous Americans of the 20th Century from the Author's Personal Collection. A book of 101 snapshots found in antique and junk shops, at flea markets and swap meets, and in other random locations by Johnson, who is credited as photo editor and author of the commentary included in this unusual book. The images are presented one to a page with whatever inscriptions there were, undoctored, actual size, and all the more poignant for this treatment. Following the images is a personal commentary or "expression" by Johnson about each one. The reader is compelled to turn the pages, so fascinating are the images; Johnson's commentary stands on its own, but you may want to go back to the images to compare his responses to your own. Which is the point, according to his introduction. Made me want to take better care of my own snapshots: to date them, identify the subjects and places, and above all make sure they don't end up orphaned in a junk shop. Fine in hardcover with dust jacket.
