An 18.5" x 11.5" portfolio cased facsimile of the original 1774 publication (circa 1900), with Richardson's "To the Public" letter, Preface, and an annotated list of the 48 plates, all on classical and mythological themes. The plates are loose, as originally presented, for the contemplation of the noble client (to choose a design or a custom "blending of particular parts"), architects, who should find the designs infinitely variable, builders (who are "not always familiarly acquainted with designs of this nature"), the plasterer, and those in "other professions" who may find that "the ornaments and enrichments can be introduced with propriety in other subjects that require embellisment". So, a useful piece of advertising as well. The plates are all in Fine condition, very lightly toned to the edges. The cloth-backed spine covering, with paper label largely intact, is worn and scuffed to head and tail, and splitting, although not detached. The marble-design green covers are scuffed and scrapped to the edges and corners; the front label pastedown is missing one corner and lightly soiled, but otherwise intact. If you buy it to frame the plates and sell them individually, please don't tell me about it.
